Portland, OR

Lincoln Court is a distinctive 12,000sf courtyard housing project on a 100’x100’ corner parcel. The project is at the nexus of Portland’s eclectic Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood and the Central Eastside Industrial District, with their broad range of architectural scales and styles. Lincoln Court’s massing and unit mix mediates between these surrounding densities, with its eight residential units, ground-floor commercial space, common room, and small garage, surrounding a central shared green space. The homes are a mix of townhouses and flats ranging from 650 to 2000 sf within structures varying in height from two to four stories, The unit footprints are small and efficient, made to feel spacious by their double-height volumes and expansive glazing, carefully located to provide both views and privacy. The project also incorporates a variety of outdoor spaces including communal and private balconies, upper-level patios, and rooftop terraces which offer views of the main courtyard, surrounding neighborhood streets, and Mt. Hood beyond to the east.

The core vision behind Lincoln Court is to create a uniquely compact community of homes imbued with the amenities of single-family houses for a diverse and intergenerational mix of residents. The design solution is to make living in proximity more desirable by providing both shared and private open spaces, places for communal social interaction, coupled with private spaces for living and working. The carefully selected materials blend harmoniously with the neighborhood’s character, evoking the industrial history of the area while giving the project a contemporary edge. To maximize daylighting and provide residents with a sense of openness, the units feature large windows, clear and patterned glazing, and translucent skylights that flood the interiors with natural light, all while maintaining a strong sense of privacy. The intimately scaled stepped volumes are carefully configured to bring both sunlight and framed views into the courtyard and beyond, making connections to the surrounding neighborhood and capturing the essence of livability.
